Hope for Gaza, headache for Israel as border opens at Rafah
Hope for Gaza, headache for Israel as border opens at Rafah
After 4 years under total lockdown, Gaza's 1.5 million residents finally have a gateway to the outside world. Egypt's dropped the stringent security that Israel insisted on for its border crossing with the blockaded region. Israel's long struggled to keep Gaza's borders watertight, depriving people there in the hope of forcing Hamas out of power. Human rights groups cite the massive humanitarian cost - from food shortages, to the sick being unable to leave for simple treatment. But, as Paula Slier reports, a lifeline for Palestinians is a real headache for Tel Aviv. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

Truce fails as Gaza border violence continues
Airstrikes and rocket attacks between Israeli and Palestinian fighters killed several people on Saturday. Following the border violence, Egyptian officials tried to secure a tacit truce between the two sides. But the attempt failed on Sunday as Israel said that three rockets had been fired at them from Gaza after the ceasefire deadline had passed. Saturday's exchange began with an Israeli attack in Rafah city, which Israel said was in response to rocket attacks launched from Gaza earlier in the week. Al Jazeera's Julia Mills reports.

Facing death on Gaza's border
Three Palestinians have been shot and injured by Israeli troops in recent days while collecting rubble near the Gaza Strip's border with Israel. Many young Palestinians scour the area to gather the bricks and stones from demolished homes to sell to help them scratch out a living. A UN report says that at least 25 Palestinians have been killed and scores of others injured by Israeli gunfire along the border since last year. Doctors say about one-third of the victims are under the age of 18. Human rights groups in Gaza and Israel have threatened to launch a legal challenge over what they describe as Israeli violations of the buffer zone. Al Jazeera's Nadim Baba reports from Beit Hanoum in Gaza. [October 21, 2010]

Egypt-Gaza Border Reopened
Egypt-Gaza Border Reopened On Saturday, Egypt reopened the Rafah border with the Gaza Strip, a blockade implemented 4 years ago in attempts to weaken the control Hamas had on the territory. The move has eased travel restrictions for 1.5 million Palestinian territory residents, yet travel permits are still required. There are still restrictions on certain exports, including construction materials. The border currently operates six days a week, and already 10000 people have registered to travel between June and August. Israel Prepares for Land Day at Golan Heights on Syrian Border, West Bank, and Gaza
Israel prepares for Palestinian demonstrations on "Land Day," and Arab leaders have announced a "Global March to Jerusalem" in which Arabs from the West Bank, Gaza, and surrounding countries will march toward Israel. In preparation, the Israeli Defence Forces are patrolling the Golan Heights along the Syrian border, and this area has recently been fortified with a fence and land mines. The West Bank has been closed, and police have tightened security in Jerusalem and throughout Israel. Land Day began in 1976 after six Israeli Arabs died in in confrontations with the Israeli Defence Forces during riots over Israel's land policies.

Israel, Gaza Strip Erupt in Violence
Israel, Gaza Strip Erupt in Violence
Cross-border violence has erupted between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The fighting so far has killed 21 Gazans, including 18 militants, and two Israelis have been seriously wounded. The outbreak started when Israel killed a top Palestinian militant leader on Friday. Since then, Palestinians in Gaza have shot more than 240 rockets at Israel, according to the Israeli government. Israel Defense Forces have responded with nine air attacks against rocket-launching sites and a weapons storage facility. Although the violence shows no immediate signs of subsiding, both Hamas and Israel seem inclined to avoid a repeat of the warfare that erupted in Gaza three years ago during Operation Cast Lead. As it has since that conflict, Hamas continues to stay out of the current clashes for fear of provoking a harsh Israeli retaliation. While the current outbreak of violence in Gaza may be more or less contained, continue to watch the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This ongoing clash—along with its equally dangerous "peace process"—will ultimately lead to an explosion of war that will engulf Israel and spark another world war.
